I live in Lafayette, TN. I want to let everyone know about how I spent my life savings hiring Adrian Powell, from Powell & Sons Construction in Red Boiling Springs, TN & what kind of job he had done for me. I hired Adrian Powell in February of 2005, to put in a storm cellar, a large cement driveway and cemented patio. I paid for a 12x12 ft. storm shelter and when the company was finished, I wound up with a 10x10. Mr. Powell did not seal the cellar from the outside. When it rained, even just a little, we wound up with a flooded cellar. The first week he finished building the cellar the bottom steps began to crack & crumble. The door leading into the cellar is no longer attached because 6 months after the cellar was built, the wood frame holding the door rotted & broke. They didn't even use pressure treated wood. Also, I was asked to pay extra for some special fiber to be put into the cement for the driveway & patio, I was told this would reinforce the cement and make it extra strong & prevent cracks. I paid the money. Less then a week after the cement had been poured, we had large cracks everywhere and the end of the driveway broke right in two. When I called Mr. Powell about the large cracks and the broken driveway he told me that it was normal, that all driveways crack. I told him that the cracks & breakage was not normal and that I wanted them fixed. It took weeks of calls for Mr. Powell to send someone out to fix the driveway. However, all they did was to pour a different colored cement over the broken piece and said that would do the trick. (it is still broken today) He said he could do nothing for the rest of the cracks. My driveway looks 20 years old. I have begged & pleaded with this company for three years now, not wanting to take him to court and trusting that he would keep to his word and have the problem fixed. He told me that he had a very strong work ethic, I was a fool because I believed him.
We have not been able to use the cellar since it's construction. I had called Mr. Powell dozens of times regarding the shoddy work on the cellar, the driveway & patio, always being told that he would take care of it. We had a tornado on Feb. 5th 2008. My family was unable to get into the cellar due to about 2 1/2 ft of standing water. I called Mr. Powell 5 days after the tornado and was told by him that he had a lot of business because of the tornado damage and would come out and look at the cellar the following week. Mr. Powell did not show up that week as promised so I called him this morning. He denied saying he would come out that week. He stated he would try and come out in 3 weeks. I told him I needed that cellar fixed, that I paid thousands of dollars to him for a job that was never done right. He said it wouldn't matter if I paid 50,000, that nothing was going to stop the flooding unless I had a proper drainage ditch. I told him that he did not seal the cellar from the outside and that was the problem. He made it clear that he was going to do nothing and hung up on me. If you plan on hiring Powell & Sons please be cautious. I learned the hard way, I hope that I can save you from losing every dime you had to someone who doesn't care what kind of job that they do. I hired Powell & Sons because Adrian Powell presented himself well, seemed to know what he was talking about and seemed to be a very nice man. Mr. Powell may be a very nice man, however, as far as standing by his work and his word, I have yet to see it. It has been 3 years since I hired this comapany and I just found out that Powell & Sons can still be held accountable for their work. I will be obtaining a civil warrant next week!
